The private hike, your group only

What year round actually means
Outside the open season the hike needs winter equipment and a guide. That is not a slogan, it is the standing advice: the pass is shut by snow, the chains are down, and the slabs that the chains exist for are under ice. A listing that runs in those months is a listing that brings crampons and a guide who has been up in those conditions. Read the season page before you assume a February date is a normal walking day.
In the open months the argument is different and simpler. Your party sets the pace. Nobody in your group is waiting for a stranger, and nobody is being waited for, which matters if you walk slowly, or quickly, or with somebody who will need to stop more often than a group of eight usually does.
The small print I would want to know
Four reviews. All five stars, and four is four. I would not treat that score as the same kind of evidence as the 120 behind the eleven-hour group hike or the five figures behind the boat, and I would rather write that down than let a run of stars do work it has not earned. What is not in doubt is the shape of the product: a private car, a licensed driver who is also the guide, and fees covered so that nothing at the car park is your problem.
Hiking gear can be requested. If you flew in with trainers and a cotton jacket, ask when you book rather than at the trailhead. What to bring lists what I would want on my own back.
Included
- Private hotel pickup in Stavanger and the return trip
- A Norwegian guide with a commercial driving licence, in an electric vehicle
- All entry and parking fees for the day
- A traditional Norwegian hiking snack at the top
- Seasonal equipment, including crampons when the ground needs them
- Hiking gear on request
Not included
- A ticket for the trail, which does not exist
- Other people: this is your group and nobody else’s
- Meals beyond the snack, unless the booking page says otherwise
- A guarantee of conditions. Fog on the plateau is normal and the guide decides
What works
- Your own pace, which is the single thing a group of eight cannot give you
- Runs year round, so it answers the months when the road is shut
- Crampons and seasonal equipment are included rather than hunted for in Stavanger
- Parking and entry fees are handled, so the car park is not your problem
- A licensed driver and guide in one person, in an electric vehicle
Worth knowing
- Four reviews. The rating is perfect and the sample is tiny
- Twelve hours, an hour more than the group version, for the same mountain
- Winter dates are a different and more serious day than the photographs suggest
- A private car does not shorten five to six hours of walking
If you are booking a date outside the summer, say so in the booking notes and ask what the guide expects the ground to be doing. The answer tells you more about your day than any forecast. In season the fog that sits on the plateau while the car park is in sunshine is the normal pattern, not a bad omen.
Book the private hike
Live availability is below. Our longer verdict, sample size and all, is on the review page. If a fixed small group suits you better, the eleven-hour hike carries far more reviews.

Frequently asked questions
Can you hike Kjerag outside the summer?
With winter equipment and a guide, which is what this listing provides. The seasons are set out on the season page.
Is a private guide worth it for a normal summer day?
Only if pace or privacy matters to you; the trail is not hard to follow in season. My view is on whether you need a guide.
Are crampons really necessary?
When there is ice on the slabs, yes, and they are included here. What the chains are for is explained on the chains page.
Should four reviews worry me?
It is a small sample rather than a bad sign. We compare it with the rest on the reviews hub.
